Forged to the essence of Rameau's last operatic ballet, also known as Carpe Diem (Pick a flower for a day), featuring György Vashegy, the top conductor of Hungarian ancient music who has brought French Baroque to life in the modern age with his excellent performances, and French diva Sabine Deviel in the leading role, 80 years old This culmination (a wonderful life lesson), the opera Les Boreades, composed by the nearby Rameau, gives us the choice to choose love over power, freedom over love. The opera was conceived in 1763 to commemorate the end of the Seven Years' War, but its premiere was canceled, and soon after, a fire at the then Opera House, followed by Rameau's death the next year in 1764, left it lying in the National Library without ever having been performed. 1964, at the French Broadcasting Company broadcast as part of a project commemorating the bicentennial of Rameau's death. The first stage performance was given by John Eliot Gardiner in 1982 and recorded by Erato in the same year. Rameau is one of the universal geniuses of European musical history, on a par with Bach, Mozart, and Haydn," asserts conductor Gergi Vaschezi. With this recording of Les Boreades, Vachezi completes an ambitious 10-year Rameau project in collaboration with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles.The cast features Sabine Devieille and other singers who excel in Baroque music and its expression, and is performed by the Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir, both founded by Vachezi. Douvielle, who made her Elate debut in a Rameau recital, plays the central role of Alfise, Queen of Bactria, who must defy the traditions of her country in order to marry the man she loves. This recording by Douvielle and others, as well as a performance of "Les Boreades" (concert format) by the same performers at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, was highly praised, saying that "Rameau's genius shines through at every moment."
