In 1944, Stravinsky met Robert Kraft, a 20-year-old music student, with whom he formed a deep friendship and partnership that would define the direction of his music. Kraft was at a standstill in his career. Feeling stuck in his career, Kraft encouraged Stravinsky to reevaluate the possibilities of the 12-tone technique, introducing him to the works of Schoenberg and Webern, as well as a younger generation of composers of whom he knew little.
