Kendra Morris is a Florida-born, New York-based singer/songwriter who has been described as a post-Amy Winehouse or a modern-day Janis Joplin. Following her last album "Nine Lives", she releases her new album on Karma Chief, the hottest soul/funk label, Coalmine.Co-produced by Tobit Schwartz AKA Little Shalimar (Run the Jewels), the album is a combination of Ronnie Spector's cheekiness and grace, the acid sensibility of the garage-psychedelic compilation "Nuggets," the post-modern modifications of mid-20th century exotica, ESG's cracked snare and sweet urbanity, all the elements of rock and roll are mischievously recombined while appropriately offering moments of vulnerable insight from a life spent in the pursuit of creativity. The bell-ringing "Dominoes" pits the mundane struggles of domestic and communal life against a Lonetz-esque time voice, while the exotica-tinged "All Your Jokes" examines what Morris calls "the need for vulnerability in a relationship when there is something to lose." There is also the smoky, doo-wop "Birthday Song," a valiant attempt to expand the birthday song canon. The almost title track, "WhatAre You Waiting For," encapsulates the spirit of the album. The guitar tinkling gives way to sirens and bongo breakdowns as Morris makes a plea for reality and self-reliance.I Am What I'm Waiting For makes bold use of small details. This is a rare record that doubles as a self-portrait, as it is, yet thrilling because of its imperfections.
