(This is the first release on Gwyn Records, a minor label in California, and features a very impressive lineup of musicians. Paul Humphrey and Earl Palmer on drums, Carol Kaye (label owner) and Ray Brown on bass, and J.J. Johnson, Tom Scott, and Conte Candoli on horns, this is truly a historical session that brought together the top West Coast musicians of the time. From the cool funk of "Better Days" at the beginning, almost the entire session was a storm of jazz funk.Free Sample" by Joe Sample, "Burning Spear" with an impressive undulating beat, "Head Start" with a bass line that is just too tannic, and the boogie shuffle "Gotcha! The jazz bossa "Balloons" and the weepy medium soul "It's Too Late" also have an outstanding presence. Not only can you enjoy Pass' intelligent soul-jazz guitar playing that hits all the right notes in a single tone, but the groovy, funky rhythm section is the best you'll hear on the West Coast.
