Description:

The latest release from Chris Potter, one of the most important figures in contemporary jazz! A new contemporary jazz suite inspired by the story of abolitionist John Brown. Featuring an all-star lineup including Nate Smith, Bill Frisell, and Bernice Travis! *Alive With Ghosts Today* is a new suite by Chris Potter inspired by the story of abolitionist John Brown. Widely regarded as one of the most influential improvisers and composers in contemporary jazz, Potter takes as his subject the 1859 Harper’s Ferry raid. This event was a historic moment that laid bare the contradictions, violence, and ideals at the very core of the American nation. Using this story as a starting point, Potter explores conviction, sacrifice, and the unresolved tensions that still linger in American society today. We step into a world of raw, quintessentially American sound, shaped by blues and folk, harmonies reminiscent of Aaron Copland, and the rhythmic drive that runs through American history. This ensemble was conceived to evoke the sound of a “small-town band”—rich in character despite its limited instrumentation. The lineup consists of guitar, bass, drums, violin, clarinet, and trombone. Bill Frisell’s guitar serves as the emotional core of the music, embodying the texture and warmth Potter envisioned during composition. Nate Smith and Bernice Travis support the pulsating rhythm of the songs with a deep, driving groove. Sarah Caswell’s violin moves freely between the transparency of classical music and the raw energy of the fiddle. Furthermore, Lane Moore on clarinet and Zekeria El-Maghabel on trombone shape the music’s contours with their unique colors, transforming the score into a living, human sound. It is the collective sound of these musicians that gives this suite its form and power.
