Smokey Hogg was one of the giants of postwar Texas country blues. This LP reissue is a compilation of works recorded between 1947 and 1951 for Modern Records, which recorded more than one-third of all his recordings, and released on the Modern-affiliated Crown label in 1961. The songs, which can only be described as free-spirited, are just great! The number of bars is a bit of a joke, perhaps because he was a heavy alcoholic, but his flippant, belabored singing is very touching. The dry, breezy tone of the guitar is also very tasteful, and this wildness, eccentricity, and unrestrainedness has a charm that once you get into it, you can't get out of it.The 12 songs include another take of the hit "Good Morning Little School Girl" (the original, of course, was Sunny Boy Issei), and other Hogg songs sung as he pleases and as he thinks fit. Piano by Hada Brooks, the queen of boogie, who was also a label mate, is also a treat to listen to. The album is available in Crown's famous "beautiful woman jacket.
