Giovanni Legrenzi was a composer active in 17th century Venice. He was appointed assistant music director of St. Mark's Abbey in Venice in 1681 and promoted to music director in 1685, and is known not only for the many pupils he trained, including Albinoni and Lotti, but also for having used his melodies as themes for Bach and Handel when they studied counterpoint. He left behind a wide variety of operas and instrumental works, but this "Litani and Antiphona of the Virgin Mary" from 1662, at the beginning of his career, is a work of dazzling beauty, in the tradition of Monteverdi, but with a dramatic character and ambitious style for its time. 1998. Founded, Nova Ars Cantandi is a vocal ensemble that explores unknown repertoire from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The ensemble has recorded rare works by Rayo, Bruns, and others, bringing their splendor to audiences. Conductor Achai is a veteran musicologist who currently serves as professor emeritus in the Department of Music at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory. Naxos Japan
