Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-1975)
Description:
Continuing the tradition of Mahler performances, Zweden's Mahler No. 10 On December 13 and 14, 2019, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Jaap van Zweden, presented a concert entitled "Beyond the Spell of "No. 9"". The first half of the concert featured Mahler's Adagio (1st movement) and Purgatorio (usually the 3rd movement, but in Mengelberg's version it is called the 2nd movement) from Mahler's Symphony No. 10, and the second half was Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, which was especially notable for its use of Mengelberg's revised version. For the Tenth, which Mahler left unfinished, Alma Mahler, with the support of Berg and Kuchenek, judged the Adagio and Purgatorio to be nearly ready for performance and asked Kuchenek to make some corrections. Alma Mahler wanted Mengelberg to give the premiere, but in fact it was premiered on October 12, 1924, by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Franz Schalk. On November 27 of the same year, the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Mengelberg gave the Dutch premiere, and on this occasion Mengelberg was provided with the score Schalk used for the premiere, in addition to the material left by Mahler, and received Alma's consent to make his own revisions. Mengelberg brushed up the score with Cornelius Dopper, the composer and assistant conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, as his assistant. The score is preserved in the Mengelberg Archive in The Hague and the parts in the library of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The major music publisher Schott, in collaboration with the Mengelberg Foundation and musicologist Marinus Dehenkamp, revised and published the "Mengelberg Edition". The first performance was entrusted to Amsterdam-born Zweden, who was concertmaster of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. On January 8, 2020, the day after the premiere in Hong Kong, Zweden performed the piece in Amsterdam with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, which Mengelberg himself conducted. Although Mahler wins in terms of attention, Shostakovich's performance of No. 10, described by a local newspaper as "a performance of unparalleled precision that evokes ruthlessness and even fear," was also excellent, and will be one of the best discs of the duo. Incidentally, Shostakovich was asked in 1942 to write a supplement to Mahler's No. 10, but he declined the offer. Naxos Japan
