Cuban-born Leo Brouwer (1939-) is known for his innovative guitar compositions, but on this album you will hear not only guitar pieces, but also works for his beloved "bandurria"... a small lute-shaped repellent string instrument popular in South America... You can also hear some of his works for the "bandurria"... a small lute-shaped plucked string instrument popular in South America. The tone of this six-double-stringed instrument, played with a pick, is both full and powerful. Among the pieces on the album, "Musica Incidental Campesina," an explosion of Cuban folk music rhythms and energy, is played by various ensembles, including a mandolin, guitar, and two guitars, but with a unique sound brought about by the use of the bandurria. The "Variations," written in honor of the Chilean singer-songwriter and political activist Víctor Jara and to mourn his passing, is like looking through a kaleidoscope, full of a variety of emotions and techniques.The other works are also technical in nature, with a wonderful mix of light and shadow, making this a great album that any guitar lover should hear at least once.
