Description:
The fifth of Schubert's (1797-1828) masses is said to be "the most beautiful and creative" of his works. Written at the same time as the Unfinished Symphony, the treatment of the wind instruments, especially the woodwinds, is remarkable. The fluid harmonies are fascinating, and above all, the entire work is characterized by an unclouded brightness. The Kyrie seems to float through the air. The Gloria is full of energy, the Sanctus is tinged with exceptional sadness, and the Agnus Dei is impressive for its limpid singing by the soloists. It also has a stately air that is reminiscent of Bruckner's masses. The Magnificat is dated September 1816 in the score, but it has been suggested that it may have been written the year before. It is a festive piece whose text is the words of Mary's prayer of thanksgiving to God in the Book of Luke, and some of the original chant is used.
