Description:
Bernard Herman is an American composer. Known for his numerous film scores, including Hitchcock's "Vertigo" and "North by Northwest," as well as "Taxi Driver," he also did outstanding work in music for radio plays. He studied at the Juilliard School and joined the CBS Broadcasting System in 1934 as a staff conductor, conducting the CBS Symphony Orchestra, which presented the latest works on the air at that time. From 1939, Herman worked with producer Norman Corwin to produce weekly radio dramas, many of which became classics. This "Whitman" is one of those plays, a masterpiece that beautifully combines an impassioned recitation with beautiful music. This recording was made live during the Postclassical Ensemble's 2016 "Herman Festival," a statement that the work has a place in concert settings. The accompanying recording of "Psycho" is not an excerpt from film music, but a new concert piece written by Herman.Clarinet Quintet "Memories of a Journey" is also full of beautiful melodies.
