In the fall of 1922, Copeland and a friend went to see a movie. The film was "Nosferatu the Vampire," a popular German horror film. Fascinated by the movie, which featured a vampire with magical powers, Copland composed the ballet music for "Glögg," and finally selected six of the fifty or so pieces that made up this suite. The composer Oliver Nassen loved the fantastical atmosphere of this work, and he performed it in 1992 and 1993, making its true value widely known. Billy the Kid" is the other major work by Copland in the 1930s, the first full-scale American ballet depicting the life of a 19th-century outlaw. Usually performed as a suite, this album features the complete version. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra led by Slatkin sings the brilliant sound in high spirits. Naxos Japan
