Description:
As a conductor, Bernstein, a "composer" who played everything from Haydn to Mahler at will and gave excellent interpretations, could be imagined to have had a deeper understanding of the workings of the symphony than other 20th century composers. However, none of Bernstein's symphonies fit into the traditional framework. As he himself said in 1977, "I have always written about the hardships that arise from the 'crisis of the age' and the 'crisis of faith,'" and his Symphony No. 1 "Jeremiah" is an ambitious work that takes its text from the "Jeremiah Lament" to depict the lament of the people suffering from the destruction of Jerusalem, composed between 1939 and 1942. Inspired by W.H. Auden's poem of the same name, Symphony No. 2, "The Age of Anxiety," was written in 1947-1948, and is an anomalous work in that it does not use voices and is accompanied by a solo piano.It is an original symphony with a bold structure and sometimes jazz idiom that depicts the lonely hearts of four people living in New York City.
