Description:
The music of Montpauw, who is considered one of Spain's greatest treasures of lyricism and transparency, is certainly based on ethnic colors, but it is far from being simply an exotic taste clothed in ethnic colors, and should be called "ethnic color because it is the composer's own voice written in music. The music is extremely introspective and never cries out loud, yet it touches the listener so vividly that it has a purity that makes it seem almost out of this world. In that it transcends exoticism while using ethnic language, and in that it condenses a rich musical world within a small time frame of only a few minutes, it is comparable to the masterpieces of Chopin's mazurkas, which he reached in the last years of his life.
