Description:

The Museu do Fado Lisbon not only collects and preserves the archives of Portugal's representative music, fado, but also disseminates this knowledge to the world. The museum's own label, "Museu do Fado Discos," is one of the key players in the fado scene today. Here is the seventh installment of our project to introduce a selection of the label's works. The most unusual work we have introduced so far is a very interesting work that explores the connection between fado and mando, a popular music that developed in Goa, India, once one of Portugal's maritime cultural centers in Asia. Goa, located in the western part of the Indian subcontinent, was ruled by Portugal until 1961 and still retains a strong Portuguese flavor. One of the best known forms of popular music in Goa is mando, a musical form that developed among Goan Catholics during the 19th and 20th centuries. Its musicality is a mixture of traditional Goan and Portuguese music, to which the men dance in formal coats and the women in Western dress. The mando is played mainly with guitars, violins, and a ghumot, a pot-shaped drum. This film explores the connection between the mando and the Portuguese music genre of fado, which was already established in the early 19th century, and delves into the Portuguese heritage hidden in the region. Iván Díaz, who has produced a documentary film on Carlos de Carmo (1939-2021), the don of the fado world. The performance is by a mixed Portuguese/Goan ensemble, featuring Portuguese violinist Manuel Rocha, Goan violinist Orlando de Noronha, and Goan guitarist Oscar do Rosario, who creates a swingy, acrostic sound here. The first half of the album is dedicated to Amalia Lozario. The first half of the album features Mando's style of playing familiar fado numbers such as 'Coimbra' and 'Lisboa Antiga,' which Amalia Rodrigues also had in her repertoire. Then, in the middle of the set, the band took up a well-known Mando tune, and plunged into the world of graceful South Seas music. The last half of the concert featured four songs they call "fantasia" (=non-genre), including the jazz standard 'I Can't Give You Anything but Love,' a medley of 'Verdes Anos' by Carlos Paredes, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and 'Summertime' by Gershwin, and a unique selection of songs from the "Fantasia" album, including 'I Can't Give You Anything but Love. and a medley of Carlos Paredes' 'Verdes Anos' and Gershwin's 'Summertime'. The accompanying DVD includes a documentary film about the film, showing the beautiful city of Goa and the performance of the film. Also included as a bonus is documentary footage of the film's violinist, Orlando de Noronha, as a guest performer at a show by the late Carlos de Carmo. This is a great bonus for Fado fans. This is truly a unique work that examines the musical ties between Goa and Lisbon. This is a disc that should be of interest to a wide range of world music fans.
