[The Current State of Latin American Music, Presented by De la Parra with Boundless Cheerfulness and Mysterious Allure] A high-energy live performance from the PAAXGNP 2023 festival on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, with Alondra de la Parra serving as artistic director. “PAAX” means “music” in the Mayan language. A work featuring three soloists composed by Paquito Delivera—a Cuban-born artist currently based in the U.S.— a bandoneon concerto written by Argentina’s Omar Massa and premiered by the Berlin Philharmonic; and a guitar concerto based on sketches by Brazil’s Yamandu Costa, orchestrated by guitarist Sergio Assad. In each piece, the composers themselves participate as soloists, delivering passionate performances filled with the unique tension and high degree of improvisation found only in live performances. The performances by the Impossible Orchestra—the core of the festival, bringing together top-class musicians from around the world—are also truly captivating, as they perfectly capture the essence of each piece. This thrilling musical journey—spanning from the Caribbean to Buenos Aires and Brazil—fuses the diverse traditions of Africa, China, and Latin America on a symphonic stage, creating a new sound that transcends the boundaries between popular and classical music.
