Description:
[A Stunning Performance! Sibelius’s Violin Concerto Featuring Rising Star Ava Bahari and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra] The Sibelius Cycle by Rouvali and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra—which has already released all seven symphonies, each of which has received high acclaim worldwide—now presents the Violin Concerto. The soloist is Swedish-born Ava Bahari, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra’s Artist-in-Residence (2024–26) and a 2026/27 ECHO Rising Star. This up-and-coming violinist made her Japanese debut in late 2024 with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jonathan Nott; her performance of Schoenberg’s Concerto, marked by steady technique and a smooth, rich expressiveness, remains fresh in our memory. It is said that Sibelius, who originally aspired to be a violin virtuoso, conceived this concerto from the perspective of pursuing that unfulfilled dream. Unlike the heroic image of the soloist typically found in Romantic concertos, this work is characterized by a narrative-like solo violin that engages with the orchestra as an equal, while combining symphonic and chamber music techniques. Bahari fully brings out these characteristics with flawless technique and a sharp, nuanced expression, while the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, led by Rouvali, sings with attention to detail while vividly rendering the score’s sweeping, undulating lines, engaging in a dialogue with the soloist. They have succeeded in crafting a modern and vivid performance of this work, which has spawned countless acclaimed recordings. For Rouvali, this marks his first re-recording of the work in ten years, following his 2015 collaboration with Baiba Skride. This release offers a deeply refined interpretation, as well as a rich performance showcasing the orchestra’s enhanced functionality. Also included is the “Lemminkäinen Suite,” which reconstructs material from an opera conceived but abandoned by the young Sibelius. From “The Swan of Tuonela”—adapted from the original overture—to the rest of the work, this grand narrative, constructed with an innovative and symphonic approach, is brought to life with Rouvali’s characteristic sharp expressiveness and overwhelming scale.
