[The Twilight of German Romanticism: Mahler and Reger in Exquisite Chamber Music Arrangements by Schoenberg and Others] This is the second installment of Pierre Dumousso’s project exploring the theme of “The Twilight of German Romanticism,” featuring live recordings from the 28th and 29th Deauville Easter Festivals held in France. This recording features masterpieces by Mahler and Reger arranged for chamber ensemble by Schoenberg and others. Rudolf Köllisch, who is credited alongside Schoenberg as an arranger of Reger’s works, was a violinist who led the Köllisch String Quartet, which premiered Schoenberg’s string quartets and other works. The arrangement of “Kindertod” is by the German composer and conductor Eberhard Kroke. For Mahler’s songs, the album features a stellar lineup of singers: Odde Ekstrem and Stéphane Duguet, both active on opera stages worldwide. These arrangements are not merely scaled-down versions of large-scale orchestral works; rather, they represent entirely new orchestrations written for ensembles of approximately 15 musicians. Performed alongside an intimate, Viennese-style small ensemble—featuring a string quartet, woodwind quintet, harp, piano, and harmonium—the music resonates deeply within the heart, as if each word of the poem were being whispered directly into your ear. Furthermore, Reger’s “Romantic Suite,” which evokes the darkness of night and the dance of elves, radiates new charm through Schoenberg’s reinterpretation.
