Description:

[The World Premiere Video Recording of Another Version of *Macbeth*, Sung in French, from the Teatro Regio di Parma!] This production marks the world premiere video recording of Verdi’s French-language version of *Macbeth* (edited by Candida Mantica, 2020). The French-language version of *Macbeth* was created in 1865 for a performance at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. At the request of the producers, Charles-Louis-Étienne Nuitel and Alexandre Beaumont translated the libretto of the composer’s revised version of *Macbeth* (the 1864 Paris edition, sung in Italian) into French. Consequently, this translated version was regarded as an impromptu local adaptation not endorsed by the composer; moreover, the premiere at the Théâtre Lyrique was poorly received, and the work was shelved. However, in recent years, as part of the editorial work on the Complete Works of Verdi being jointly undertaken by Ricordi and the University of Chicago Press, musicologist Candida Mantica conducted a detailed analysis of primary sources (manuscripts, letters, etc.), she discovered that the composer had been deeply involved in the creation of this French version. A critically edited score faithfully reflecting his intentions was published by Ricordi in 2020. Furthermore, based on this edition, the work was performed in concert form as the opening piece of the 20th Verdi Festival in Parma that September, and momentum is building for a reassessment of the work’s value. Baritone Ernesto Petti, who sings the title role of Macbeth with expressive richness, capturing the character’s nervous indecision and anguish; and rising star soprano Lydia Friedman, who responds with a compelling performance and singing that takes her ambition to the brink of madness, using her beautiful, shadowed voice. The rich, refined singing of the renowned singer Michele Pertusi as Banquo and the expansive tenor of Luciano Ganci as Macduff form a splendid contrast to the leading couple. Set against the richly nuanced stage design by the late master director Pierre Audi, who passed away in May 2025, this production offers a unique take on *Macbeth*, where the dynamic music born from the baton of Roberto Abbado—a conductor active primarily in Italian opera—and the soft resonance of the French singing blend exquisitely.
