Description:

Finnish composer Kalevi Aho began studying violin and composition at age 10, studying under Einojuhani Rautavaara at the Sibelius Academy and Boris Blacher in Berlin. He has served as Composer-in-Residence with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra since 1992 and became the orchestra's Laureate Composer in 2011. By 2025, he had built an extensive body of work including 18 symphonies. Symphony No. 17, conceived and composed in 2017, is a monumental work in three movements lasting approximately 60 minutes. It features a massive orchestration including organ, and is characterized by the use of rare instruments such as the rupophone (a type of baritone oboe created in 2009 capable of producing even lower notes) and the contrabassoon (an improved contrabassoon with a range of four and a half octaves). The first movement, "From the Abyss," begins with a motif in the lowest register, forming a weighty movement that could stand alone as a symphonic poem. The second movement, "Scherzo Macabre," possesses an eerie character reminiscent of a dance of death. The final movement, "Distant Song," recalls past melodies and dances while returning to the present, fading away into silence. Premiered in 2019, it was highly acclaimed as Aho's masterpiece. This is the long-awaited first recording, made with the composer present.Released on SACD hybrid disc. Naxos Japan
