Description:

The Bavarian Radio Chorus, under the baton of Antonini, has performed a fascinating piece of late Renaissance and early Baroque repertoire. The "Jonah" by Giacomo Carissimi, considered the "father of oratorio," is one of his masterpieces, along with "Jephthah," and is based on the Old Testament book of Jonah. Jonah, who spent three days swallowed by a whale and then vomited out, was considered an important Christian prophet because he reminded people of Jesus, who was resurrected three days later, and various works of art based on him were created after the Middle Ages. The music is dramatic, with an eight-voice chorus describing a storm on the sea. The beautiful tenor Kyuwon Han, who plays Jonah, and other soloists from the Bavarian Radio Chorus portray Jonah's struggle to follow God, while the lively chorus and the skilled instrumentalists of Il Giardino armonico add much to the drama. The Lamentation of Arianna" is a five-voice madrigale based on the famous song from the lost opera "Arianna" by Monteverdi himself. It is a masterpiece in which Monteverdi's caustic expressiveness explodes in a song about the despair of Ariadne (Arianna), who has been abandoned by the hero Theseus (Theseo). This Madrigale, which is now mostly sung by small vocal ensembles, is sung with great precision and expressiveness by a relatively large choir (42 singers in the photo in the booklet), which will surely lead you to new discoveries. The Tears of St. Peter" is a series of religious madrigals based on the deep penitence of the disciple Peter, who denied his relationship with Jesus during the trial of Jesus. The "Prophecy of Sibylla" was written in Lasso's 20s, and is unique among his works in that it uses many chromatic progressions reminiscent of those of Gesualdo. The Bavarian Radio Chorus will bring their superb ensemble to both pieces. For the prodigy Antonini, who has been at the forefront of ancient music performance, these repertoire are his specialty, and the Bavarian Radio Choir, with whom he has regularly collaborated, shows off their full potential.
