Description:
World premiere recordings of 23 songs! A rich disc that brings to light the unknown realm of Massenet, a composer of operas. Massenet is one of the leading composers of the French modern era, along with his contemporaries Bizet and Fauré. Although his achievements as an opera composer, including his masterpiece "Werther," have not gone unnoticed, it is not well known that he has left countless excellent works outside of opera. His songs with orchestral accompaniment are one of Massenet's core areas, which J.-C. Boulanger, a scholar of modern French music, considers "an important area in which he was never an afterthought. In 2022, the Venice-based Center for Romantic French Music (Palazetto Bru Zane) released the first album of Massenet's groundbreaking work in this field, with six renowned singers and conductor Hervé Nicquet, and this second release also includes, with the exception of one song All are world premiere recordings. Led by Hélène Guillemette, a Canadian singer with a strong background in French modern and classical music, the four singers again deliver songs with full presence, bringing to life 24 works from Massenet's breakthrough period in the world of opera (1870s) to the eve of World War I.Starting from the relatively early "Pagan Nativity" (1872) to the later works such as "Songs of a Forest in Bloom of Amaranthus" (1901), an elegant and undulating work consisting of quartets and double female voices, and "Lyric Expression" including a singer's reading of Schoenberg's "Pierrot Possessed by the Moon," which was completed the year before its composition and first performance, the concert is a great pleasure to listen to. Pierre Dumousseau, who has made many great recordings for ALPHA, conducts with great attention to detail, and the fullness of Massenet's unique orchestral technique can be fully appreciated.
