Description:
The true author of "Beethoven's Jena Symphony," Witt's symphonic works! Friedrich Witt was a cellist and composer born in 1770, the same year as Beethoven, in Niederstetten, a small town in Württemberg, Germany. After studying with Antonio Rosetti in the Ettingen-Wallerstein orchestra and working as a cellist, he was music director of the Würzburg court orchestra from 1801 until his retirement in 1824. For a time he was also music director of the Würzburg Theater, and although he also wrote works for the stage, his main works were orchestral and religious compositions. Twenty-three symphonies are extant. A forgotten figure since his retirement, Witt suddenly came into the limelight in the 20th century when his C major symphony, discovered in a library in Jena in 1909 and initially attributed to the young Beethoven, caused a sensation as it filled a gap in the development of his compositional method. The piece was revived in 1910 and was considered "Beethoven's Jena Symphony" until 1957, and several recordings were made, including by the Staatskapelle Dresden under Franz Konwitschny. This C major symphony is now considered Witt's Symphony No. 14 (NAXOS has a recording of the Sinfonia Finlandia Jyvaskyla conducted by Patrick Gallois, 8.572089). Symphonies Nos. 1-3 on this CD were written in Würzburg after 1801. Despite the large scale compositions featuring trumpets and timpani, the style follows that of his predecessors Haydn and Rosetti, and the classical aspect of the symphonies stands out compared to Beethoven's innovative symphonies from "Heroes" onward. The first movement begins solemnly in a slow tempo of adagio or grave and continues into a propulsive allegro, the third movement with a light and witty minuet, and the sense of unity created by scattering the same melody throughout the movements, all of which show the skillful and elaborate structure of the composer's compositional abilities. The Cologne Academy, a leader in HIP (performance based on historical knowledge), performs music from the Renaissance to the Romantic period using the instruments and performance methods of the time, and under the direction of the spirited conductor Virens, who presides over the Academy, we are treated to a wonderful performance that accurately captures the style of Witt's works and distinguishes the three symphonies' personalities. The Cologne Academy will be led by the spirited conductor Virens. Enjoy the unknown classical symphonies by Witt, a composer mistaken for Beethoven.
