Description:

Cipriani Potter was born in England. He received his musical education from his father at an early age, then studied with English musicians and with Alois Förster, who introduced him to Beethoven in Vienna, and soon after his return to Japan, he gained fame as a popular composer and pianist. He composed no fewer than nine symphonies in the early 1830s, most successfully the G minor symphony of 1832; in 1834, Potter completed the C minor symphony (No. 3), which he conducted himself and premiered at the Philharmonic Society on June 8, 1835. Criticism was mixed, with some praising its "boldness and power," while others complained about the originality of the melody and the sound of the instruments. Potter subsequently attempted to revise the work, but was unable to reach a definitive draft, and his relationship with the association deteriorated. On the other hand, the Symphony in D major was not adopted by the Society's subscription concert in 1834 due to its length, but the premiere at the King's Theatre in the same year, conducted by Potter himself, was generally well received, and a repeat performance in 1844 was also highly acclaimed. After Potter's death, the Society revived the work in 1872 based on the autograph score and it was well received, but this was the last performance by the Society.Because the autograph score contains traces of later revisions by a third party, this recording attempts to restore the original version. Ricercate on a French Theme" was written for his own concert, and was first performed on May 12, 1830. It was performed several times thereafter, and a piano version was published in 1835. It is conducted by Griffiths, who is by far the most experienced conductor in the repertoire of this period. Naxos Japan
