The Queen Elisabeth International Competition for Piano 2025 just closed on May 31, and a live recording of selected performances by the winners of the competition is already available! The winners of the piano section of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, which is called the "World's Three Great Competitions" along with the Tchaikovsky Competition and the Chopin Competition (including the time of its predecessor, the Ysaÿe Competition), include Emile Guileris (1938), Leon Fleischer (1952), Vladimir Ashkenazy (1956), Valery Afanasyev (1972), Abdel Rahman El-Basha (1978), Frank Blarey (1991), Anna Vinitskaya (2007), Denis Kosyukhin (2010), Boris Giltburg (2013), Jonathan Fournel ( In 2021, Keigo Mutsukawa and Tomoki Sakata made headlines by winning prizes. As a prestigious competition, the participants include top prize-winners of international competitions, and this year's competition again featured a series of extremely high-level performances.Nicolas Meuwsen, the first Dutchman to win the first prize in the competition, was outstanding in the difficult Prokofiev Concerto No. 2, as well as in his sharp technique and ability to attract the audience and his co-stars. Second place went to Otsu City native Wataru Hisasue. He is the highest Japanese ever to win the second prize, along with Akira Wakabayashi, who won the prize in 1987. Hisasue has been studying in Germany, and his performance of Brahms' Concerto No. 2, which he played at the end of the final round, was a magnificent performance that even gave the audience a sense of dignity. Valère Bournon, a native of Belgium, took third place, tying for the highest place in the competition's history. She also won the Audience Award. Seiya Kamei's "Recollections of Norma," which came in fifth place, captivated the audience with his technique, dynamic and passionate expression, and delicate and graceful singing. The video streaming of the performance showed the audience enjoying the performance while immersing themselves in the work, which left a lasting impression on the audience. Four Japanese students were selected as the 12 finalists, and it is a proud record that Tomoki Yoshimi and Shiori Kuwahara's performances were included as outstanding performances of the semi-final and final pieces.It should also be noted that the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Kazushi Ohno, continued to provide support throughout the final round.
