Howard Griffiths, Frankfurt Brandenburg State Orchestra

Ferdinand Hiller was born into a wealthy business family in Frankfurt and studied under Johann Nepomuk Hummel in Weimar from the age of 10. After living in Paris from 1829 to 1836, he worked as a conductor mainly in Leipzig, where he was friends with Mendelssohn. 1850 In 1850, he settled in Cologne, where he conducted the Gürzenich Orchestra and organized the Rhine Music Festival twelve times. His works were neglected for a time, but are now being reappraised. The two symphonies recorded here demonstrate his intensely dramatic style. The Symphony in E minor, "Still Spring Must Come," is Hiller's only published symphony and his most successful work. First performed in 1849, it was also performed in New York in 1858, but was forgotten after the unification of the German Empire in 1871. inspired by the 1841 poem "Hope" by the 19th century poet Emanuel Geibel, it represents the transition from winter to spring. It is a work that occupies an important place in the symphonic tradition, as it shows the influence of Beethoven and Wagner while also attempting a unique approach to title music. The Symphony in F minor was completed in October 1832 and premiered in December 1833. Although critics criticized the eccentric development of the first movement, the second movement with its impressive rhythm, the idyllic third movement with its pastoral atmosphere, and the final movement, which combines sonata and rondo forms, make it a work full of character.
