Olari Elts / Estonian National Symphony Orchestra

Description:

Ondine label launches the complete symphonic works of Repo Smela, a leading Estonian composer of the second half of the 20th century. Performed by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and conducted by the orchestra's music director, Olaly Ertz, who was born in Tallinn, the same city as Smela! Born in Estonia during the Soviet era, Smela studied with Veljo Tormis and Heino Eller, who greatly influenced the country's music scene, and later at the Moscow Conservatory. He was a composer of atonal music, computer music, and film music that conveyed emotions in an easy-to-understand manner. The six symphonies written between 1981 and 2000 are considered to be representative of the more serious side of the composer Smela, who had many faces. The first of Ertz's complete works is a coupling of his first and last works. Both are in two movements, all of which end with a weak, fading note. The first movement of No. 1 contrasts a grand and solemn sound that imitates the sound of bells, reminiscent of Arvo Pärt's Tintinabuli style, with a serene and contemplative music that is also reminiscent of Pärt. In the second movement, the sound of the orchestra, reminiscent of the wind blowing across the air, continues on and on in a weak tone, then suddenly interrupted by march-like music reminiscent of Shostakovich and scenes depicting war, and then returns to the world of wind and silence again. The same motifs are repeated but the instruments are skillfully changed to create a unique effect. The first movement of No. 6 also has a strong contrast between the serene music and the loud sound, but the sound in the loud part is more destructive, and the strong contrast is reminiscent of Cancelli's orchestral works. The second movement is enigmatic music with a tragic atmosphere. The complete Smela symphonies were recorded by Paavo Järvi for BIS, but Nos. 1-5 were performed by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra (only No. 6 by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra), so when this collection is completed, it is expected to be the first complete set by an Estonian orchestra and conductor.
