John Wilson (Conductor)

Description:

A new series by John Wilson and Sinfonia of London is a collection of works by William Walton. The first collection includes three works, including a violin concerto. The opera "Troilus and Cressida" was conceived under the influence of his partner at the time, Alice Winborn. However, the script was rather verbose and unwieldy, the singers were not well sourced, and the musical received mixed reviews when it premiered in London in 1954 due to a lack of preparation. The work was subsequently performed in other cities, but critics were ultimately harsh, and Walton revised it. Included on this album is a symphonic suite of four pieces that arranger Christopher Palmer created in 1987 based on the work. Each piece represents a character or incident, culminating in a tragic climax. The Violin Concerto was commissioned by Jascha Heifetz, but at the time Walton's mind was on composing film music, and he was not sure whether to give priority to this. Again, Alice Winborn pushed him to write this concerto. The passionate tarantella in the second movement makes the work challenging; the complete work was completed in 1938 and premiered in the U.S. the following year; the orchestral part was revised in 1943, making it one of Walton's most famous works. The soloist for this piece, Charlie Lovell-Jones, was born in 1999, and since his debut at the age of 15 at the Royal Festival Hall, he has performed with major orchestras around the world and has been broadcast on radio and television. She has an extensive competition history, including a participation in the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition in 2020, and is currently a leader of the Sinfonia of London. The overture "Cape Portsmouth" is a short overture written in 1924-25. Inspired by an etching by the English satirist Thomas Rowlandson, the work depicts a lively harbor scene with syncopated, jazz-like music. The overture has been performed repeatedly around the world, and the complex rhythms used in the overture have attracted much attention. The album is available in SACD hybrid format, which conveys the orchestra's varied timbres and vast dynamic range in high sound quality. Naxos Japan
