Madrigale (madrigal in English) was derived from the popular secular song (flottola) of the early 16th century in Italy. This form, which uses free verse with no verses or refrains, and melodies that are set to the inflection of the text, inspired generations of musicians to create numerous works. On this album, you will hear works in the madrigale form, from intimate solo songs to more dramatic operatic scenes, each with a different composer's twist. Performed by the Monteverdi String Band, led by violinist Oliver Webber, soprano Hannah Elie, and lutenist Toby Carr. Webber has added his own diminution
