Appearance of the historic recordings of his masterpiece oratorio "The Book of Seven Seals" and Symphony No. 4. Franz Schmidt was born in Pressburg (now Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia) and moved to Vienna with his family at the age of 14 to study composition with Robert Fuchs and cello with Ferdinand Hermesberger at the Vienna Academy of Music. After graduation, Franz Schmidt was not only a cellist in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mahler, but also a composer who showed unique harmonic expression and counterpoint skills. His Symphony No. 4, composed in 1933, was described by Hans Pfitzner as "closer to perfection than Bruckner's works. This album includes the aforementioned Symphony No. 4 and the historic recording of the oratorio "The Book of Seven Seals" completed in 1938. After the success of the Fourth Symphony, Schmidt, in view of the worsening world situation and his own deteriorating health at the time, conceived the oratorio "The Book of Seven Seals," based on the New Testament book of Revelation, as the culmination of his compositional activities. This work was completed in 1938, requiring large-scale orchestral music, solo voice, mixed chorus, and organ. It was premiered in Vienna on June 15 of the same year as one of the events celebrating the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Musikverein. The 1962 live recording on the album features Julius Patzak, known for his passionate and famous singing in "Song of the Earth" (1952) conducted by Walter, and Otto Wiener, a renowned Wagner singer, as soloists, with Anton Lippe, also known as a clergyman, conducting, Anton Lippe, who is also known as a priest, conducts the orchestra in a dramatic and sublime performance. Symphony No. 4 is conducted by Rudolf Morhardt, former chief conductor of the Vienna State Opera. This CD is a reissue of Epic LC 3164 (Symphony No. 4) and Amadeo AVRS 5004/05 (The Book of Seven Seals). (Naxos Japan)
