Franz Benda is a composer of the generation that bridges the gap between Baroque and Classical music. He excelled on the violin and was highly acclaimed for his performances, which, while possessing outstanding technique, did not flaunt it, but instead struck a chord with the audience through their natural flow. This disc includes a well-proportioned sonata with bass part in a classical style and an unaccompanied capriccio in a free style similar to a baroque fantasy. It gives a real sense of the era in which Benda lived. Evgeny Sviridov is the winner of the International Old Music Competition in Bruges. He is the concertmaster of such remarkable orchestras as Be-Rock and Il Pomo d'Oro, and here he whispers, talks, and sings on the violin, the essence of Benda's music. Naxos Japan
