Description:
This is the tenth installment of #bruckner2024, a project led by the CAPRICCIO label and the International Bruckner Society to record all drafts (versions) of Bruckner's symphonies by 2024, the 200th anniversary of Bruckner's birth. The fifth symphony, which has no manuscript problems, uses the Novak version, and as Armin Knaap was the first to point out in 1908, "the opening 22 bars contain all the original themes and motives of the entire work," and Poschner conveys the magnificent counterpoint fabric built from these materials in a solid sound. The performance time of approximately 71 minutes suggests a rather fast tempo, but the "speed" is never felt to be at the forefront because of the detailed and careful handling of phrasing, articulation, and accents. The mystical, meditative, and sometimes melancholic chorale-like melodies are played with a firm seat. Poschner seems to regard the finale as the climax, and the fourth movement, which takes almost the same time as the Jochum/Dresden and Wandt/Northern German Radio Symphony Orchestra movements, is a particular treat.The domestic edition will be accompanied by a Japanese-language commentary by Yutaro Ishihara (a member of the International Bruckner Society), who has been well-received by specialist magazines.
