The complete Beethoven symphonies in four-hand piano version arranged by Franz Xaver Scharwenka. Featured in this fourth collection are Symphony No. 1 and No. 6, "The Countryside. Scharwenka, who arranged the music, is a German composer of Polish descent. His brother Ludwig Philipp Scharwenka is also a well-known composer. The Scharwenka brothers studied piano under Czerny's pupil, Theodor Kulak, and the arrangements here show the pianism of Czerny's direct descendants and respect for his teacher, Beethoven. The album also includes Busoni's adaptation of Mozart's piano concerto in the margins. The brilliant arrangement of the original piece, with the addition of gorgeous voices, is a must-hear. This work is also performed by the piano duo of Tessa Eiss, a pianist from Cape Town, South Africa, and Penn Skuman, also from South Africa. The duo has recorded all nine symphonies arranged by Scharvenka, and has given concerts in London and other cities, receiving favorable reviews. Naxos Japan
