Schreker (1878-1934)

Description:

Schreker's masterpiece "The Man in Search of the Treasure" from the Deutsche Oper Berlin -- a rare video production! The court of a medieval kingdom. The queen loses her life day by day after someone steals her emerald necklace, which she had treasured more than life itself. The king, deeply distressed, orders the search for Eris, the itinerant singer, a magician who uses a lute to find the "lost treasure". Not long after, a large crowd gathers for the eve of the wedding of Els, the daughter of a tavern keeper in the castle. However, the guests are informed that the groom, who was supposed to be at the feast, has been found dead in the woods, and they suspect Eris of having killed him and taken the necklace. ...... Franz Schreker's "The Man in Search of Treasure," a masterpiece along with "Faraway Echoes" and "The Branded Man," will be performed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in May 2022, following Korngold's "The Miracle of Heliane," a collaboration between Christoph Roy and Marc Albrecht that was well received by the audience. A stage recording was made at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in May 2022.Schreker was a popular composer at the time, on a par with Richard Strauss, and in 1920, when this work was premiered, he was appointed director of the Berlin Higher School of Music. Like Strauss, his style is known for its uniqueness, drawing from the late Romanticism (post-Wagnerian), but also incorporating various new artistic trends of the time (impressionism, expressionism, neo-imagism, and even Italian verismo operas). Like the two preceding operas, this work, like its predecessors, is characterized by the composer's extensive use of mature sounds depicting the erotic psychology of a man and a woman, composed to a libretto by the composer himself, and Klemperer, who conducted many of Schreker's operas, wrote: "...the critic Paul Becker (omitted) said that the love duet in 'The Treasure Hunter (Mama)' is a love story of a man who is a treasure hunter. The love duet in "The Treasure Hunter" is the best since "Tristan"" (Conversations with Klemperer, published by Hakusuisuisha). In this production, Elisabeth Strid gives a fascinating performance as the villainess Els, who plays a trick on the men who woo her, and Daniel Johansson responds with passionate singing as Elis, who, after a conflict with Els, repents and forgives her sins. The two leading singers and orchestra are led by Marc Albrecht's agile baton against the backdrop of Christoph Roy's lucid direction, which makes the opera's story visible.
