A 2-CD set containing amazing first-time recordings and historical testimonies] The opening "Lamentations" is a live recording of the first performance in the UK. Mahler recordings by Joan Sutherland, who dominated the world with her superb coloratura, and Peter Pears, one of England's most famous singers, are extremely rare. Walter Gehl, conductor, is a German Jew who studied with Schoenberg and fled to England to escape the Nazis. His Mahler recordings are also rare. CD2 contains the Symphony No. 4 conducted by Gehl (live at the 100th anniversary of Mahler's birth). The Adagio in No. 10 is conducted by Hermann Scherchen. According to the label, this is the first time that either of these works has been released. Mastered by the acclaimed Paul Bailey. In addition to these, it is important to note that interviews with Stokowski and Frieze are included.Stokowski was present at the rehearsals for the premiere of the Eighth Symphony of a Thousand conducted by Mahler in 1910, and Frieze, a timpanist with the New York Philharmonic, had performed under Mahler in 1909.
