Telemann's "12 Fantasias for Solo Flute" was composed between 1727 and 1732. It is one of the few unaccompanied works of the 18th century, when works for solo flute with basso continuo were the norm. The entire work is a well-balanced arrangement of sonatas in the classical slow-rapid-rapid-rapid form and new sonatas with dances and other forms, with plenty of opportunities to show off one's technique. The Finnish player Sami Junnonen, who gave his debut recital at the Helsinki Music Center in 2012, has since been active as a soloist and principal with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and in 2017 toured Russia as an official cultural envoy for the 100th anniversary of Finland's independence.
