Gretzky became famous with the worldwide success of his Symphony No. 3, "Symphony of Lamentations," a collection of religious choral works that can be considered his musical starting point. The Symphony of Lamentations, which swept the British charts in the late 1990s and became synonymous with "classical music for healing," is now available in a collection of religious choral works that can be considered Gretzky's musical starting point. One of the sources of inspiration for Gretzky in his later years was Catholic music from Poland. This "Church Songs" for unaccompanied mixed chorus was arranged by Gretzky from melodies and lyrics that had been sung in Polish churches. Some of the pieces are serene and filled with pious prayers, while others have a joyful atmosphere reminiscent of folk dances. Gretzky has created this collection so that it can be sung in concert or at a church liturgy. There have been previous recordings of the Polish version, but this is the first complete recording of the Latin version. The performance, which took place in a cathedral in Gdansk, takes a rather slow tempo and invites us into a prayerful and contemplative mood. Naxos Japan
