This is a collection of Beethoven's complete symphonies arranged by Franz Ksabaer Scharwenka, whose first collection (SOMMCD0637) was well received. Scharwenka is a German composer of Polish descent. His brother Ludwig Philipp Scharwenka is also a well-known composer. The brothers studied piano under Czerny's pupil, Theodor Kulak, in Berlin, and their arrangement shows the respect for Beethoven's works that only a direct pupil of Beethoven (Czerny studied directly under Beethoven) can show. In addition to the four-hand version of Symphony No. 5, this second collection includes Schumann's "Andante et Variations" and Saint-Saens' "Variations on a Theme by Beethoven," which uses the third movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 18, Op. 31-3.
