Description:
The first Globe Theatre was founded in 1599 on the South Bank of the River Thames in London, with Shakespeare himself as one of the shareholders. The theater was rebuilt after a fire in 1613, but closed in 1642 at the outbreak of the Puritan Revolution and was demolished in 1644. In 1997, more than 350 years later, the Globe was reopened as "Shakespeare's Globe" on a site near the old theater, following the wishes of Sam Wanamaker, the actor, film and stage director who initiated the reconstruction project. The theater, which recreates the exterior of the old theater and seats an audience of 1,400, has become a new Mecca for Shakespearean theater. The collection includes 25 of Shakespeare's comedies, tragedies, and historical plays (plus "Dr. Forstas" by Christopher Marlowe) performed at the theater between 2009 and 2018 by outstanding actors and directors.
