Description:
English pianist and composer Ronald Stevenson, a granddisciple of Ferruccio Busoni, brought the piano music tradition of Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff to Scotland and developed it. He is also known for his love of the difficult Kaihosru Sorabji music and for recommending it to John Ogdon, his junior. This sixth volume in Christopher Guild's acclaimed series of Stevenson's piano works presents a selection of his early works. These pieces were created after his decisive encounter with Busoni, and do not use the complex writing style of his later masterpiece, "Passacaglia on DSCH". Although Stevenson had not yet settled in Scotland at the time, the works already show the influence of local folk songs. Sonatina No. 3 and "Retrospect" are world premiere recordings. Naxos Japan
