Description:
The world of cantatas tackled head-on by the brilliant talents at the forefront of the French classical music scene. Shortly before his death, France had developed its own cantatas with French lyrics, modeled on the chamber cantatas of Italian composers, and these cantatas, sometimes with violins and flutes, are full of musical descriptions and have the charm of small operas. Many recordings have been made of the masterpieces by Campra and Clérambault, but this album, produced by the Chateau de Versailles Spectacles label, features a full lineup of the most talented soloists and ensembles at the forefront of the French music scene. The theme of the album is the music of the ancient mythological poets. The theme is the story of Orpheus, a poet and musician of ancient mythology. Starting with Clérambault's masterpiece, followed by Pilloy's rare work, published as a sequel to the popular work, and Rameau's "Orphée," which is surprisingly little recorded despite the composer's popularity, the three singers, who are widely active in Baroque operas and religious works, will sing their detailed interpretations of these pieces, The instrumentalists, many of whom are experienced ensemble soloists, also provide a variety of interesting performances, leaving nothing to be desired. The final two violinists are Louis Clerc of Nevermind and Joseph Cotte of Pygmalion and Ensemble Correspondances, two gifted violinists who are active in France's foremost old music organizations. The final track, which concludes with "No Song," is also very enjoyable. Naxos Japan
