The "real job" of the keyboardist who served Louis XIV, played in an ideal environment by one of the greatest virtuosos of our time, Latry! Known for his performances with numerous top orchestras, the virtuoso Olivier Latry is also the official organist of the Paris Notre-Dame Cathedral organ, which suffered a fire in 2019, and produced his last recording before the disaster. From ancient to contemporary music, he has always focused on the essence of the music he performs, carefully assessing the acoustic environment to maximize the appeal of the instrument, and his interpretations have always brought out the best in the music. The recording was made in the Royal Chapel of the Palace of Versailles, which was completed after many years of planning under the reign of Louis XIV, whom the great master served. The "Mass for the Abbey," which is included in the only existing collection of organ music by Couperin, is a lengthy work written in accordance with the worship custom of the time, in which the organ performance alternates with the recitation of the prayers of the Mass. The movements are divided into sections by verses, and the tones used are clearly indicated as the titles of the pieces. With the incomparable and exquisite singing of some of the best singers on the French classical music scene, Ratley brings this masterpiece back to life in the context of the worship of the time, with songs by Dumont and Nivelle, 17th century greats who also served in the royal chapel.The organ in the Royal Chapel of Versailles has been restored to its original form, and it is rare to be able to relive the acoustics that Couperin himself would have experienced in his own performances, with beautiful engineering by recording engineer Hugues Deschaux, known for his early masterpieces on the ALPHA label, naturally conveying the reverberations and atmosphere of the chapel, He vividly conveys the interplay between the organ and the singing voices.
