Belgium's Late Baroque WorldSince the end of the Middle Ages, the southern part of the Netherlands (present-day Belgium) has been a place where Catholic traditions flourished under the rule of the Habsburgs, and a rich culture was nurtured there. At the beginning of the 18th century, when the region was temporarily under the Electorate of Bavaria, the latest Italian styles, in addition to French court music, had a major influence through the activities of composers brought from Munich by the Electorate. Born in Belgium to an Italian court composer, Fiocco was an important figure who, in his short life, absorbed both the Italian and French styles of the late Baroque and created his own beautiful musical world. The small church music he composed for the serene worship services held during the Holy Week before Easter is a collection of works in the French style but with the Italian style of songfulness, and it is a rich collection that allows us to enjoy his talent. The Ensemble Bonne Cordes, a group of Portuguese old music players from all over Europe, has decided to explore the best of Fiocco's charms with two CDs of his Lamentations for Holy Week. This is the first recording to include all 11 pieces composed in Brussels and Antwerpen.The 11 pieces, some in multiple movements and some in long single movements, are full of charm, comparable to those of Handel and Vivaldi of the same period. The cello plays independent standing. The cello plays an independent role in many of the pieces, allowing the listener to enjoy the interplay of the singing voice and the low sound of the gut strings. Naxos Japan
