Peter Shepherd Scaves was appointed Emeritus Professor of Music at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2022. He is a violinist and musicologist whose repertoire ranges from the Baroque period to contemporary works. In this album, he focuses on unaccompanied works by two composers active in Modena, Italy, at the end of the 17th century, and performs them on two historical instruments. Giovanni Battista Vitalli was one of the founding members of the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna when it was founded in 1666. He was the father of Tommaso Antonio Vitali, known for his "Chaconne de Vitali," and was a composer who contributed to the development of the trio sonata and influenced Corelli, Purcell, and others. Although the "Partitas" have been recorded in ensemble form, this is the first time that they have been recorded unaccompanied. Giuseppe Colombi, on the other hand, was the music director of the Cathedral of Modena and left behind many works. The "Scordatura e Composizioni Varie" is a collection of various dances, including one with scordatura (irregular tuning), and this is also the first time it has been recorded unaccompanied.The last four pieces are from a collection of 156 pieces compiled by 17th century composer Franz Rost.
