Description:
The Biddulph label, which specializes in reissuing recordings of historical string players, has started a new series. This is a reissue of recordings by students of Auer, who was known as a great teacher. Leopold Auer (1845-1930) was born in Hungary and studied under Joseph Joachim and others. He was one of the most famous musicians of his time. He later taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and the Curtis Institute of Music, where he built an overwhelming reputation as a teacher, especially since his students in St. Petersburg included such virtuosos as Heifetz, Mirshtein, and Ehrman. Auer's students were not all molded to a single style, so there is a wide variety of performance styles among his students. This series will give you a new appreciation of the breadth of Auer's students' styles. The first artist selected for this series is Efrem Zimbalist (1889-1985), who entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory at the age of 12 to study with Auer, and was praised by the conservatory's director, Glazunov, upon graduation as "a talent beyond compare. Auer had a particular appreciation for Zimbalist's intelligence, and indeed his playing preserves the form and dignity of the piece even in moments of heightened passion and excitement. His bowing technique is superb, and the length and smoothness of his legato breaths are sigh-worthy. This album of 12 small pieces and two sonatas conveys his charm. As Zimbalist visited Japan several times after 1922 and enthusiastically taught Toshiya Eto at Curtis, it is a pleasure to see that two pieces with a connection to Japan are included in this collection.
