This disc includes two masterpieces written by Bartók for the Basel Chamber Orchestra led by Paul Sacher and three of his piano pieces arranged for percussion ensemble. The Divertimento for Strings was composed in 1939 in a classical form. The clarity of the music, which is almost free from the atmosphere of disquiet of the time, shows the true essence of Bartók's music. The "Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta" was a great success when it was premiered by the Basel Chamber Orchestra in 1936, and critics hailed it as a masterpiece. It is conducted by Pietari Inkinen, who is the principal conductor of the Japan Philharmonic and the Deutsches Rundfunkphilharmonie (German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra of Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern). He has a diverse repertoire, including operas, and has recorded symphonies by Dvořák and Prokofiev with the Deutsche Rundfunk Philharmonie to great acclaim. The three piano pieces performed by members of the orchestra and guests, including Yuka Ota, a percussionist living in Germany, were arranged by a percussion ensemble, as was expected of Bartók, who loved percussion instruments and used them extensively in his works.
