Alpha is pleased to present a unique project that explores the musical inspiration that the early poet-saint du Bellay gave to the composers of the Renaissance. The most famous poet of the French Renaissance was Pierre de Ronsard (1524-1585), whose poems were composed by his contemporaries as well as modern composers such as Ravel and Poulenc. The seven important poets who corresponded with Ronsard and wrote poetry in French, rather than in the literary language of the intellectuals, are called the "Pléiades" (seven outstanding poets of the same period, compared to the seven stars), and they have been given much importance in the history of literature. Among them, Joachim du Bellay (1522-1560), who had an early acquaintance with Ronsard, wrote "The Defence and Exaltation of the French Language" in 1549, in which he explained the refinement and importance of French as well as Latin, and was highly appreciated by the court for the charm of his beautiful poetry. His works also attracted the attention of musicians, and many of them, including the Flemish composers Arcadelt and Lassus, have composed music for his works. Douce Mémoire, based in Tours in central France, has continued its research and performance practice of ancient music, and has selected a wide variety of works by contemporary composers based on du Bellay's poems. The diverse compositions of the vocalists, who make the most of the flavor of the verses while delivering outstanding old-time singing, and the old-time instrumentalists, with their beautifully simple and bewitching tones, will bring us closer to the truth of the beauty of 16th century French vocal music, which is based on the refinement of the poems.In addition to polyphonic chansons and instrumental performances sung both a capella and solo, there is a superb reading of du Bellay's works by the talented French rap artist Kwalu, accompanied by ancient instruments.
