He challenges each instrument with daring experiments, using sound to depict his inner struggle with his own fate.”—Vladimir Jurowski (excerpt from the original liner notes) The long-awaited second CD from the Bavarian State Opera’s in-house label, BSOrec, launched in 2021, is now available. It is also noteworthy as the first recording featuring Vladimir Jurowski, who assumed the roles of Music Director and Principal Conductor of the orchestra for the 2021–22 season. The Bavarian State Opera had been in lockdown since March 2020 due to the spread of COVID-19, but the concert recorded here in October 2020 was the first “Academy Concert” (a regular concert by the Bavarian State Orchestra) held after the theater reopened. It must have held special significance for both the performers and the audience. The program opens with Brett Dean’s *Testament* (orchestral version); this “Testament” refers to Beethoven’s “Heiligenstadt Testament.” Dean was inspired not only by the content of the letter but also by its handwriting and the pressure of the pen, composing music brimming with energy that evokes the struggle between surging creativity and anguish. Passages from Beethoven’s works (such as the Rasumovsky Violin Sonata No. 1) are quoted throughout. Although the original was written for 12 violists, the version performed here has been arranged for orchestra. Yurovsky paired this piece with Symphony No. 2, which was composed around the same time as the “Heiligenstadt Testament.” In contrast to the harrowing content of the “Heiligenstadt Testament,” this work is often viewed as bright and cheerful music with little trace of anguish; yet, Yurovsky presents an exceptionally powerful and dynamic interpretation. Yurovsky has engaged with Beethoven in a multifaceted way from an early stage; in performances with the Age of Inline Tunement Orchestra, he studied period instrument playing techniques and concepts, and with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, he has taken on Mahler’s orchestral arrangements. True to Yurovsky’s long history of research and practice exploring the possibilities of Beethoven’s orchestral scores, the result is music that is meticulously detailed, powerful, and intense.
