He was more of a "poet versed in the art of music" than a composer, and his interpretation of verses is crucial to the approach to the category of ancient music. While weaving music at the forefront of Ars Nova, which brought a new innovation to polyphonic music of the time, he also left behind many rhymes in verse only, with no music attached, and his interpretation of these rhymes, while fully recognizing his literary achievements, has been performed in the French-speaking world in a wide range of fields from the Middle Ages to the present.
