Foxtrot" is a type of dance music that originated in the United States and is said to have been derived from ragtime. In the "Roaring Twenties" of the 1920s and 1930s, between the two world wars, this music became very popular along with jazz, shimmy (shoulder shaking dance to jazz), and Charleston (alternating leg jumps while on both knees), which were also in the same vein, This craze quickly spread throughout Europe. Pianist Gottlieb Wallisch, who has pursued a wide variety of foxtrots, has included works from Austria and the Czech Republic in his first collection, and works from Germany in his second collection, but this third collection includes foxtrots from nine countries, from Central and Eastern Europe to Russia. This third collection features foxtrots by composers from nine countries, ranging from Central and Eastern Europe to Russia, including such rare pieces as the "Foxtrot" by the great conductor Evgeny Mravinsky.
